COMSAT leverages this expertise in the government sector and is the leading provider of aeronautical satellite communications services to the US Department of Defence, state and local agencies. We partner with Inmarsat, Intelsat and Iridium to deliver secure, resilient, end-to-end solutions that connect airborne assets with each other and with command and coordination centers for mission-critical voice, data and video applications anywhere in the world.
Global Xpress offers continuous Ka-band service which can be integrated to augment existing government platforms or used as a standalone solution. Steerable spot beams target capacity where needed for consistent, reliable inflight performance; and optional failover to SwiftBroadband L-band assures availability in all weather.
Global Xpress delivers multi-megabit data rates that support a diverse range of applications, including manned/unmanned airborne ISR, live full-motion video, theatre backhaul, tactical communications, command and control (C2) and emergency response, as well as voice, email, messaging, internet access and videoconferencing for a mission office in the sky. Service plans include a choice of Committed and Maximum Information Rates with flexible contact lengths.
COMSAT’s private terrestrial infrastructure is directly connected to Inmarsat’s satellite ground stations for Global Xpress to deliver secure, end-to-end global connectivity of customer traffic.
SwiftBroadband offers dependable inflight voice and data connectivity for cockpit and cabin communications over the Inmarsat L-band network. Up to four channels can be provided per aircraft, which each deliver a circuit-switched voice channel and up to 432 kbps for simultaneous voice and standard IP data. Streaming IP is supported up to 128 kbps, plus HDR streaming up to 700 kbps. Channels can be bonded together to permit data rates in excess of 1 Mbps. SwiftBroadband is also compatible with government-grade encryption and secure communications standards.
Intelsat FlexAir provides global, high-throughput Ku-band spot beams over the Intelsat EPIC network for data-intensive applications using small 45-cm antennas. It delivers high performance at a lower cost per bit, with support for high definition, full-motion video, which makes it ideal for airborne ISR operations as well as command and control links. This is complemented by an ISR-specific service plan with a Committed Information Rate for a geographic focus area.
Fuselage or tail-mount antenna options are available for flexible deployment, including Satcom Direct’s Plane Simple tail-mount antenna. The Intelsat EPIC platform’s multi-spot beam technology also enables enhanced anti-jam and interference mitigation, for secure and resilient communications. COMSAT is an Authorized Master Distributor for Intelsat FlexAir.
The Iridium Certus L-band network of meshed LEO satellites is designed for high reliability and low latency. With standard IP data speeds up to 704 kbps download and 352 kbps upload, it’s ideal for UAVs, search and rescue, disaster assessment, environmental monitoring, remote infrastructure inspection, flight tracking, monitoring and Electronic Flight Bag services, as well as voice calls, Push-To-Talk radio, messaging, email, internet access, video streaming, file and IoT data transfer. The network is also backwards compatible with existing Iridium devices and terminals.
COMSAT has been awarded a Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) to provide Certus services to all Department of Defense (DoD) EMSS users. This includes discounted pricing, SIM cards and airtime through the DISA Storefront or COMSAT directly; and 24/7 NOC staffed by security-cleared personnel in the US. Global EMSS IP and voice traffic is routed through a segregated network accessible only by EMSS users.
